What’s on your internal radar?
Are you looking for clear blue skies, pristine open spaces, peace and quiet? Then, should Botswana be on your internal radar? My answer is, “Yes definitely”.
Whether you are interested in the cultural history of the Khoi San Bushmen, the birding paradise of the Okavango, the wildlife haven of Chobe National Park, a cruise along the Zambezi River or the fascinating geology of the Tsodilo Hills then Botswana should be on your to-do list.
Just a few words of advice before you set off on your intrepid journey. Should you be travelling independently or through a travel agent keep in mind the best time of the year to start your trip. For instance, if you wish to see the heaviest bird in the world, the Kori Bustard, go to Nxai between February and April. For the most lavish holiday inside Moremi Game Reserve arrive between July and September. The clearest desert skies in the Kalahari are between June and July. Be prepared to bring warm clothing for evenings, between May and September as it can be unexpectedly chilly if you are out on a night game drive.
Most of all be savvy when travelling in Botswana. Bring comfortable walking shoes, southern Africa is always an adventure. Wear long trousers for walking through the Bush as the thorn bushes can really scratch. Always wear a hat, as even the winter sun is strong in Botswana, and don’t forget to put on the sun screen BEFORE you go out. Do not dangle your arms or legs out of a Mokoro canoe on the river as it attracts undesirable wildlife. Similarly, do not attempt to swim in the rivers. Never assume fast flowing water is OK to drink. After camping remember to take all your litter with you and safely burn all your toilet paper. Above all NEVER go for a walk in the wilderness alone, those buffalo are nowhere near as friendly as the cattle back home.
Having said all that, Botswana is the most fascinating country I have had the privilege to spend time in and I can highly recommend it. For more information in tailor-made tours through Botswana go to our website: www.bornbikingtours.com.
